After the events of Batman (2022), Oz Cobb, aka The Penguin, makes a play to seize the reins of Gotham’s criminal underworld. Absolutely nailed the tone and atmosphere
An umbrella falls and the logo changes to the Warner Bros. logo. Featuring Graham Norton and guests: Lady Gaga/Demi Moore/Colin Farrell/Richard Ayoade/Jack Savoretti (2024). Brutal, dirty and dark, but Farrell manages to capture that glimmer of charm, like Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano.
Amazing is the right word
There are similarities with sopranos, especially in tone. A lot of dark stuff goes into this opening episode, but there are still comedic moments that fit the tone and don’t undermine it. Where do we begin with Pharrell. I love seeing talented star actors throw themselves fully into roles like this, and the makeup/cgi or whatever exactly they did to physically transform him into the penguin not only passes the eye test, but looks incredibly realistic .
And Farrell, as an actor, fully immerses himself in this role
There is always the risk that if the makeup is not good enough or not enough, it can completely distract you. With the penguin, it adds to his performance and the overall quality of the show, because it’s a damn good job. Maybe I’m a little biased because he’s one of my favorite actors before this show, but I think this will give him some well-deserved accolades. I never tune into new shows right away because I like to watch all the episodes at once, but I wanted to see how this one would actually turn out.
