Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East in Heretic, plus more modern women killing the horror game
Line of Events
Two young religious women get drawn into a game of cat and mouse in a strange man’s house. The end credits music is a cover of “Knocking on Heavens Door” to the tune of Mazzy Star’s “Fade into You.” A nod to the fact that Radiohead’s “Creep” is a reiteration (due to the tune) of The Hollies’ “The Air That I Breathe,” mentioned earlier by Grant in the film. The end credits indicate that no generative AI was used in the making of the film.

I saw seven films at this year’s TIFF, and the one that got my vote for Best Picture was HERETIC, starring Hugh Grant (who would have also gotten my vote for Best Actor if that were a voting category). I was very impressed to see him get in touch with his dark side in the HBO miniseries THE UNDOING, but here he takes it to the extreme playing a mild-mannered, religion-obsessed psychopath. It’s a break from his rom-com persona of schizophrenic proportions.
So begins a cat-and-mouse game in which Grant puts his faith to the test
Co-stars Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East are also excellent playing two Mormon missionaries who think they’re going to visit someone interested in converting to Mormonism. But Grant turns out to be far more erudite – and questioning – about religion than they expected. When they realize he’s not actually interested in converting but rather debating religion, they try to leave but find they’re trapped inside.
The result is refreshingly offbeat
Horror-wise, it’s solid, but doesn’t go to the extremes of similarly claustrophobic horror films like FUNNY GAMES (original) and SPEAK NO EVIL (2022 version). My only complaint is that the choice of Mormonism as a religion seems a bit calculated. In short, watch this film if you’ve ever enjoyed a Hugh Grant film and want to see him at the top of his game.
I haven’t felt this confident about an acting Oscar nomination for a TIFF film since seeing Allison Janney in I TONYA in 2017
Side note: There was a Q&A after the film and several people praised me on the way out for a question I asked : “Was Richard Dawkins their influence?” Co-director Bryan Woods confirmed that he was.
